Leptospirosis complicated with variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome

Abstract

A 33-year-old female farmer with no medical history of importance was admitted to the Emergency Department for headache, fever, bilateral peripheral facial paralysis, paresthesias, muscle pain and ataxia with subsequent development of ascending paresis in the lower limbs. Initially, she was managed in ICU, received immunoglobulin G, antibiotics and mechanical ventilation. Electrophysiological study revealed an acute and axonal polyradiculopathy; and, the ELISA Ig M test for Lesptospira spp. was positive. She was discharged after 54 days of hospitalization, well recovered.
